Field Notes: AITF uses CI-600
in drought tolerance study

Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures (AITF) provides innovation, research and commercialization services that deliver economic and social benefits to Alberta and Canada. The corporation works extensively with industry, government, academic and other science and technology organizations to bring good ideas from the lab bench to the marketplace.

AITF researcher Dr. Ludovic Capo-chichi (pictured left) is currently working on a research project to improve drought tolerance, nitrogen and water use efficiency in small grain cereal crops, such as barley and wheat.

Using our CI-600 In-Situ Root Imager, researchers from AITF are evaluating root traits such as depth, length, shoots, and total biomass in both field conditions and in a greenhouse trial.

Results from Dr. Capo-chichi’s study are expected to demonstrate the difference in root distribution of barley and wheat varieties and the niches created underground by extraneous conditions such as drought.

You can learn more about how the CI-600 In-Situ Root Imager is being used by researchers around the world by visiting the CI-600 Publications page on our website.
